First and second, Vinales and Valentino, 35 thousandths of a second between them and everyone else behind, albeit close. The 2018 M1 is dancing gracefully on its debut appearance and its knights couldn't be happier. “It's easy for me to be fast with this bike" summarises the Doctor, who seems more in love with his bike with every day that passes.
“Yesterday, the first time I put in slicks, I lapped in 2’07”, then I continued to improve and was consistently at the front. The thing I'm most pleased about is how easy it is to be fast. I can take the lines I want, enter the turn as I want and when I push the times come down”.
is the new bike also kinder to the rear tyre?
“Last year the biggest problem was excessive consumption but even in this sense my first impressions have been positive. Even with a used tyres, after 15 laps I was still able to set good times. There's still work to do but we're on the right track”.
Would a race simulation tomorrow help to clear up any last doubts?
“I'd like to do that, but it depends whether I'll have the energy. I also have other tests to carry out and I don't want to compromise them. We'll see how I feel tomorrow morning and then I'll decide”.
Did you test the new frame?
“Yes and I liked it, the starting point is that of 2016 with a few small changes. There may be another development prior to the start of the season”.
As they are similar, do you run the risk of getting confused?
“There is always that risk! (he laughs) But in the November tests we worked out what me and the other riders preferred and we'll retain this DNA in terms of the chassis”.
Did the new fairing also bring the expected results?
“I like it, it feels like the front wheel has better contact with the ground making riding less physical in certain conditions. I can't see any negatives in terms of using it”.
The bike is improving thanks to your feedback, which means Vinales also benefits…
“On other occasions it's Maverick who's helping me, by doing different tests. It's like this in a factory team, I'm pleased because I like the bike and can be competitive. Then we'll see if I'll be fighting my team-mate or another rider, in the end it doesn't make much difference and I prefer to focus on myself”.
The bike is working, but how is your physical condition?
“I feel better than yesterday, not yet 100% though as I'm still a little short of breath. But these first tests in Malaysia are tough for everyone, even the younger riders”.
Is your injured leg still restricting your training regime?
“I can't go running yet and there's no better training. I could cycle but it doesn't require the same effort…”
At this point, Valentino is interrupted by his telemetrist Matteo Flamigni, a cycling fan, ready to defend the sport.
“I meant to say that I'm not used to it and that it takes more time than running - Valentino corrects himself with a laugh - Anyone from now on my leg shouldn't bother me and I should be able to start running again and prepare for the first race".
