He didn't focus on lap times, preferring to focus on race pace. Despite the crashes, there is a smile on Andrea Iannone's face as he concludes testing at Sepang. He has found what he was looking for and finishing in eleventh place is unimportant.
“We've improved our pace, completing some long runs, also the used tyres has proved competitive. The setting too has given us positive results, particularly at the front. I'm not even suffering to much through the slow corners and so I can say that today was an important day”.
The crashes didn't stop you. What happened?
“I could feel some vibration through the slow corners, I wanted to try and push to find the limit. The first crash was with a fresh tyre, to find confidence you have to push and I ended up on the ground. With the second, I lost the front, a stupid crash. Unfortunately I'm not really happy with this new tyre”.
You have good race pace though.
“I've improved on yesterday's performance by one second, without even aiming for a time attack, which is interesting”.
How would you compare this performance to what you did at the Spanish tests?
“At Sepang it's gone better, better than Valencia. I don't count Jerez as I only rode for one day and had a bad elbow. This was my first real test and we're at a good point. If you'd told me it would go like this, I'd have been very pleased”.
If the race was tomorrow, could you aim for the podium, or even the win?
“I didn't see what kind of pace the others have, I don't think we're any worse off, particularly on the used tyre. The race is different of course, as you have competition”.
Have you made any particular requests ahead of Phillip Island?
“I haven't asked for anything relating to the frame, as we're already sorted there. Perhaps the set-up. We're lacking a few details that can make the difference”.
