It’s the same old story and all you have to do is look at the standings to realise it. The first Yamaha is once again the old M1 ridden by Zarco, 5th in Valencia at the end of the first day, whereas both Rossi and Viñales are out of the Top Ten that would guarantee a spot in Q2.

No point beating around the bush, the 2017 M1 is a disappointment and Maverick is not making any excuses.

“We are definitely in for a difficult weekend - the Spaniard admits - We have already tried a lot of changes to the setup, but nothing worked. The time I did today is our current limit.

A time that places him almost one second behind the best, on a track where the Yamaha has always performed well in the past.

The biggest problem is going into corners. I can’t stop the bike and take it into turns quickly - he sums up his troubles - It is a limit that we have already had and on a track like this one with tight turns, it is exacerbated. On the other hand, in the fast points, the bike does very well.

In the past, Viñales had complained about the Michelins, but that is not the case now.

The tyres do well. They have good potential; the problem is not the tyres but the bike - he clarifies - I have to brake early and no matter how much effort I put in, the times just won’t come. It is all very strange, but I’ll keep trying and working.
