MotoGP: Valencia: Dovizioso and Rossi called upon to break Spanish rule

The MotoGP grand finale at Valencia that will assign the world title to either Marc Marquez or Andrea Dovizioso. The Italian has never won at this track, in fact, since 2006, no Italian has ever reached the highest step of the rostrum. The last to do so was Melandri in 2005, and Rossi before him, in 2003 and 2004. We are sure that the Doctor and the Ducati rider will want to put an end to this fast.

Here are the numbers regarding this final round.

- This will be the 16th consecutive time that Valencia is hosting the closing round of the season, and thus becomes the track to have hosted the final round for the longest period of time..

- The Valencia track was named after Spanish rider Ricardo Tormo, who won the 50cc world title for Bultaco in 1978 and 1981. In addition to his 15 wins in the 50cc Grand Prix class, he also obtained four wins in 125cc. His career concluded in 1984 due to a leg injury suffered during a test; he passed away in 1998 after a battle with leukemia.

- Dani Pedrosa is the most successful rider at Valencia, having won on six occasions; three in MotoGP, two in 250cc and one in 125cc. Jorge Lorenzo follows close behind, with four wins at the track, all in the top class.

- The MotoGP race has been won by Spanish riders on nine occasions. Sete Gibernau triumphed with Suzuki in 2001; Dani Pedrosa won the MotoGP race in 2007, 2009 and 2012; Jorge Lorenzo in 2010, 2013, 2015 and 2016; Marc Marquez three years ago.

- The last non-Spaniard to win at Valencia was Casey Stoner in 2011.

- After the introduction of the MotoGP in 2002, Honda has been the most successful team, with eight victories, the latest by Marc Marquez in 2014.

- Yamaha has won the Ricardo Tormo MotoGP on five occasions, including the last two years with Jorge Lorenzo.

- Ducati has scored two wins, with Troy Bayliss in 2006 and Casey Stoner in 2008. Third place for Andrea Iannone last year was the first Valencia podium for a Ducati rider since Stoner's second-place finish in 2010.

- Suzuki's only podium at this track was with John Hopkins in 2007.

- The MotoGP race at Valencia has only once been won by a rider who was not on the front row: Marc Marquez, who started from fifth place on the grid in 2014.

- Since Valencia has been the final round, there has never been a year in which the three world champions all won their respective final races of the season.

- The seven Moto2 races to have been held at Valencia have each been won by a different rider: 2010 - Karel Abraham, 2011 - Michele Pirro, 2012 - Marc Marquez, 2013 - Nico Terol, 2014 - Tom Luthi, 2015 - Tito Rabat and 2016 - Johann Zarco.

- The last five Moto3 races to take place at the track have been won by five different riders, all on a KTM: 2012 - Danny Kent, 2013 - Maverick Viñales, 2014 - Jack Miller 2015 - Miguel Oliveira and 2016 - Brad Binder.

- The last rider to have won in the Moto3 class from pole position was Julian Simon in 2009.
