MotoGP: Dovizioso: it doesn't make sense to focus on a mistake by Marquez

All good, really good”, Andrea Dovizioso is smiling as he arrives at Valencia. There was a nice surprise awaiting him in hospitality, a video in which his close friends wish him luck ahead of the final showdown. On Sunday, just before 3pm CET, he'll know whether it was actually a mission impossible.

I'm calm for now, I have nothing to lose- he assures is - I know how difficult it will be to achieve our goal, I can only win and then something would have to happen to Marquez”.

When you put it like that…
Exactly, I don't want to look at it that way, focusing on a possible error by him. I will try to win, it will be complicated but not impossible. I have to continue working as I've done until now, I'm just focusing on that. From a psychological point of view, I feel calm, I just have to try and do the max”.

Is it harder for you to win or for Marquez to make a mistake?
For me to win maybe, because Valencia has characteristics that don't perfectly suit our bike. But last year I wasn't far from the front, so I'm not giving up yet. This season, we've proved to be competitive even at tracks that have been tough for us in the past”.

It's all in Marquez's hands in the end…
Marc is Marc, it depends on what's going on in his head. He's good at managing certain situation but at times he struggles to reign it in. But, again, talking about what might happen is pointless. I have to focus on myself. Marquez has a massive lead, he's definitely under more pressure than me because he has everything to lose”.

And if you win the race but not the championship?
I'd be a little angry! (he laughs) I've always maintained that it's not the number of wins that sees you win the championship. I'm 21 points down but it would be wrong to only consider the final result. We need to look at the whole season, and I'm extremely happy with what we've done. If we're unable to win the title, it means we were missing something and will need to improve for next season”.

So no regrets?
It's too easy to have regrets and is not the way to view things. Points are scored on Sunday and what's done is done. Also, who expected to see us fighting for the title at the last race...?

If you have to choose the best moment of the year?
“The Mugello win was crazy, the way it came about and the whole weekend really. But perhaps my best race was Silverstone, where I won despite not being the quickest”.

You'll need your dark side this weekend too, that irrationality…
It's a quality to use at the right time, as I've done this year. When it goes like that, you can do incredible things that are able impossible to explain. In MotoGP all the riders are fast, but there are those who manage themselves better and those who struggle to do so.

However it goes, you have many fans on your side.
The support I've received this year has been completely different to what I've known before, it's logical that things then when you do well. But the best thing, the thing I'm most pleased about, is when I meet someone who says that I was able to move them, to excite them”.

And the worst?
When they say ‘you've got to win’, as if Marc and I were tied for points. But to be honest I like that too (he laughs)”.
