Lorenzo's first year with Ducati is coming to an end and it's time to draw some conclusions. Sepang was a track where he found himself in difficulty during test, after a positive first outing at Valencia.
“In Spain, I'd tested the Desmosedici with winglets, then in Malaysia without and I found it very different, I really struggled. With the Yamaha I was also fast at Sepang, though i never won for some reason, but with the Ducati it was all more difficult. We worked hard, on both the bike and my riding style, taking a step forward on day two and a bigger step on day three”.
The starter to a season in which Jorge has never been able to fully express his potential.
“It's been a complicated year - he admits - I haven't achieved the results I wanted, but from Brno on we started to see significant improvement”.
A win would top things off.
“We've always been missing something, I could have won at Misano if I hadn't crashes, and came close at Aragon. Perhaps I'll be able to do it here, maybe I'll have an opportunity. I know that there are many strong riders but I also know I'm with them, in the top group. The bike hasn't undergone significant changes since the start of the year but I feel different on the bike and the new fairing brought benefits”.
While Lorenzo chases his first win, his team-mate Dovizioso tries to hang on to his title chances. How does the Majorcan see the situation?
“Andrea has to ride as he knows how to do and not change his strategy. Sure, Marquez has a 33-point lead and it won't be easy” he replies.
The Italian could do with some other riders putting themselves between him and Marc. So Lorenzo is asked once again whether he would help Dovi.
“He has a big advantage and the chances of Marquez not being up front are slim - he reflects - In motorcycling anything can happen, I haven't spoken to Andrea about this. if the championship is still open at Valencia, I would help him, deciding what to do here depends on many factors”.
