Niccolò Canepa has done it! The Italian has become World Endurance world champion for the first time together with his team-mates Mike Di Meglio and David Checa. A memorable season for team GMT94, victorious at the end of what has been a roller-coaster of a season.
The year saw the Yamaha riders forced to play catch up to Suzuki SERT right from the start. Despite three consecutive wins at Le Mans, Oschersleben and in Slovakia, the Yamaha riders arrived in Japan separated by just one point.
In the race, Canepa and his team-mate raced with intelligence and consistency, while SERT had a tough time, even forced to make a pit stop due to a technical problem. An eleventh place finish was therefore enough for the R1 riders to be crowned champions. SERT concluded in 18th place.
