The risk was that we would see more or less a repeat of Saturday, but instead, the dry track gave Maverick Viñales a hand, confirming his competitiveness in these conditions. Despite his eleventh spot on the grid, at the Sachsenring the Yamaha rider made a comeback ride that took him to the foot of the podium ahead of Valentino Rossi.

Today I made the right choice in terms of the tyres – Maverick began – In fact, they worked very well, especially the front. With this compound I was able to be fast already with the Suzuki.”

For him the race was a matter of catching up from the start.

“Unfortunately, on a narrow track like the Sachsenring, it was not easy to make up position after starting from so far back. I tried to push hard from the start, finding the right pace until finishing fourth. I am satisfied, because with the dry asphalt I was very fast.”

Asked about which frame he used, he skirted the question.

“They didn’t tell me which one it was (he smiles).”

At the Sachsenring, the Championship reaches the halfway point and there is a touch of disappointment on Maverick’s face.

I am definitely disappointed – he said – because we lost various points between Austin, Montmelò and Assen. In Holland, with dry asphalt, I could have won the race. Obviously, I need to learn and grow, especially in the second part of the race.”

The Championship will resume on the first weekend of August in the Czech Republic, where tests are also scheduled.

“The plan is to keep following the path we began in the first part of the season – Maverick advised – trying to be competitive again like in Qatar and Argentina. Unfortunately, we suffered too much on certain occasions, especially in Barcelona.”

However, he is going on holiday with a smile on his face and he has every reason to do so.

“With a few more championship points it would have been positive – he commented – but I can’t complain either. This is my first year on the Yamaha and I am giving it my all to try to stay out front.”

Then he warns the competition, since he has absolutely no intention of throwing in the towel.

“Now the tracks I like are coming. The next race will be in Brno and it is like a fresh start. We have a great opportunity to get back on the top step of the podium and we will try to be at the top of our game.”
