SBK, Knock-out race at Misano, Sykes wins

Crashes for Melandri, Rea and Davies, caught up in an accident, hand the Brit the win. Lowes and Rea, who continued after the contact, complete the podium

SBK: Knock-out race at Misano, Sykes wins

Simply referring to the race as a thriller perhaps doesn't do it justice. Just consider how all four of the riders who led the race crashed out, with the virtual podium at the start of the last lap losing two of its stars during the final corners. Tom Sykes wins, after lying fourth up untol the penultimate lap and a fair distance from the podium. A podium completed by Alex Lowes and Jonathan Rea, the only top rider able to continue after crashing.

The incident involving the Northern Irish rider and Chaz Davies was the most dramatic moment of the race; during the last lap, as he exited the carro turn, Chaz lost control of the bike and was hit in the bike by Rea, who was also launched into the air as a result of the contact. We await to hear the condition of the Welshman, but the fact he immediately got up after the crash, to then give in to the pain, is already a positive sign. What could have been a perfect day for Ducati became a nightmare, considering the crash for Marco Melandri too. The Italian was comfortably in line for a podium finish at the start of the last lap, but he lost grip and crashed, only able to score one point at the line.

Michael Van Der Mark is another to have suffered huge disappointment: the Dutch rider surprisingly led the way for a number of laps, before crashing at the long turn. The reason for his crash remains unclear though, as initial images seem to point to a tyre issue similar to that sufferd by Rea at Donington. In this fraught race, it was Jordi Torres who finished fourth, followed by Fores, Laverty and Krummenacher.

The top ten is rounded out by Italians Savadori and De Rosa, while Camier settles for 11th after crashing. Stefan Bradl was another forced to retire, having raced with a fairing dedicated to Nicky Hayden for only about a lap before surrendering to the Honda's technical problems.
