MotoGP: Barcelona test: Marquez beats Vinales in the final stages

The Montmelò weekend has concluded, but the track action has not. Monday saw the first day of testing at Barcelona for the various teams, not least Yamaha, with only the factory Ducatis of Jorge Lorenzo and recent winner Andrea Dovizioso, as well as the Aspar and Avintia teams, choosing not to take part.

The fastest in the scorching Spanish heat was Marc Marquez, who confirms his speed on the flying lap, setting a best of 1’44”071, just two tenths from Dani Pedrosa's pole time on Saturday. Behind him, Maverick Vinales (+0.366). The Spaniard and Rossi can test two new frames brought to Spain by Yamaha, as well as a new fairing that he mounted in the final minutes of the day, managing to improve on his weekend qualifying time by two tenths. Jonas Folger rounds out the top three, though closing nine tenths behind, followed by Dani Pedrosa and Aleix Espargarò. The Spaniard was able to test some new parts for the front of his bike.

Behind the Aprilia rider are Crutchlow, Zarco, Redding (who crashed with no consequences), Rabat and Valentino Rossi. The nine-time world champ focused on comparing the two frames, stopping the clock on 1’45”635, thus lapping a second slower than he did in qualifying. Behind #46 is Danilo Petrucci, forced to stop ahead of time due to some muscular problems with his shoulder, after his crash on Sunday.

Andrea Iannone is 14th, two seconds from Marquez; the Italian is testing a new frame this weekend. Alex Rins is back on track, closing 17th (penultimate) and also suffering a small crash. He seems to be doing well physically though, able to complete 62 laps and setting his best time on the penultimate lap.

Testing, for the Yamaha and Suzuki teams, will continue on Tuesday.
