Not even he can explain what happened. Maverick Viñales was ready to rain on Marquez’s parade, but instead a sliding crash in the early laps cut him out of the games. Already at the start, the Spaniard had noticed that something was not quite right.

“It was my mistake. I lost the front on a tight spot. It’s a pity, because during the weekend I had not had any similar problems. When you fall that way, it is not normal. Luckily, I did not get hurt and I feel strong and motivated anyway for the coming races.”

What is the outcome for you?

“This performance motivates me anyway because of the way the weekend went, especially the challenge with Marc. Now we will go to Jerez, a good track for the Yamaha, where I know I am fast. We will work on finding a good setup and push hard until the end.”

How do you explain the crash?

“It was truly strange. Unfortunately, the tyre did not have the same grip that it had in the morning. I am very disappointed because I can’t explain the reason for a crash like that. When I ended up on the ground I was truly incredulous. It’s a pity. It was a good chance to battle with Marc and collect more championship points.”

It is a mistake that has an impact on the Championship.

“I always think race to race, pushing to the limit. The goal is to always win.”

Did you have different sensations compared to the warm-up?

I rode the same way throughout the weekend and I cannot find a reason for what happened. It will be important to assess the tyre, because from the first lap I was sliding a lot on the left, whereas on the right I was able to go fast. Among other things, I was pushing as I always do, since the goal was to reduce the gap behind Rossi.”

Do you think it is a tyre defect or a problem with the bike?

“The settings on the Yamaha were the same as in the warm-up.”

Marc is unable to explain what happened in Argentina too. So is it a tyre problem?

“Frankly, I do not feel like I can make any comments on the tyre, but it certainly did not have the same grip it had in the morning.

Now you will have to catch up.

“This Championship is definitely not easy. Besides Rossi and Marc, there is also Daniel Pedrosa. We will go to Spain well aware of my potential.

Are you worried?

“No, this is my first year with Yamaha and I do not feel any pressure.”

If you had not ended up in the gravel…

Marc rode an incredible race. It is hard to say how it would have ended. I definitely would have been able to fight for the podium.”
