He immediately wanted to get things back on track. Marc Marquez wasted no time in second practice, flexing his muscles on the Honda. His time, a 2’04”061, gives him leadership on Friday afternoon, improving by nine tenths on the time set by Vinales in the morning.
Behind #93, a wonderful surprise, or rather Johann Zarco. With just seconds to go, the Frenchman, riding the Tech3 Yamaha, was actually leading the way. The rookie had to deal with the five-time champion though, who relegated him to second place, almost three tenths behind (+0.286).
Not a bad start by the Frenchman, who was able to keep the factory Yamahas of Vinales and Rossi behind him. The Spaniard is third, almost four tenths from the lead (+0.390), with the Doctor just behind, having worked with the medium tyres before moving to the soft solutions. Despite the gap of seven tenths (+0.745), #46 is five thousandths faster than Pedrosa's Honda, while Andrea Dovizioso is sixth (+0.769). These three riders are all within just 0.024 of a second.
Cal Crutchlow showed important signs of recovery at Austin this afternoon. Putting the morning's crash behind him, the Brit climbed to seventh place (+0.944), followed by Jonas Folger (+0.972) and the Ducati Pramac of Scott Redding (+1.055). There is also room for Andrea Iannone inside the top ten (+1.081). The Suzuki rider snatched tenth place on his last attempt, beating Jorge Lorenzo. Danilo Petrucci places behind the Majorcan.
FP2 saw Loris Baz crash, fortunately without consequences. There was a scary moment for Karel Abraham, thrown from his Ducati with the bike remaining in the middle of the track. Fortunately nothing serious happened.
