SBK: Melandri: "Tomorrow I'll be on track chasing a dream"

Marco Melandri heads for bed with a special wish. To reach the podium in race 1 tomorrow, at 5am Italian time. Having closed fifth today, right behind Sykes, has given him confidence. In the second timed practice, he was the only one who managed to improve.

“This afternoon many focused on race pace, which allowed me to shave off a few more tenths. The track conditions were not ideal, but I think we're going in the right direction”.

Rea has the pace to be able to run away with it.

“Chaz and Johnny showed that they have great pace this afternoon. I don't know if I'll be able to match that to be honest, as we were doing different work during FP2. We won't know until the race”.

What are your expectations for tomorrow's race?

“To have fun, nothing else. I want to try and stick with the leader, but realise that won't be easy”.

What's the most encouraging aspect of today?

Personally I don't think my pace is bad. It won't be an easy race, especially in terms of managing the tyres”

Will it be tough to keep pace with Rea?

“We'll see tomorrow.

What's the aim for Race1?

It would be stupid to say I've come to Australia looking for the win, that would be a mistake. I'll go with my feelings, trying to have fun and run a smart race”.

You're the best through the final sector.

“Unfortunately there are others where I am losing time. This track is odd, as I've said several times, we need to find a compromise. In the final section the corner is a flowing one and that could be positive on the last lap, if I'm close to the leaders that is (he smiles)”.

What steps have you taken with respect to the tests?

We've continued to take small steps in a measured way, aware of what's we're doing. The bike is predictable now, I've been able to adapt fast. Now I have to decide on the tyre".

Is the podium possible?

“Let's say it's my dream. I'll run my race, I'm sure it will be a good race”.

The best time of the day was set by Marco's team-mate Chaz Davies, a 1’30”189, but the Welshman is more concerned with race pace. Rea's performance hasn't gone unnoticed and the Ducati rider is aware that the Panigale is still suffering somewhat.

“I'm pleased with my time, but we still need to do something over the longer distance. The track is a little complicated for us, so we've had to make some changes, but we've succeeded in becoming more competitive”.

Is winning the main goal or is the podium enough?

“I'll take the race as it comes. If there's the chance, we'll try to win. Otherwise I'll be going for as many points as possible. Consistent results are key".
