Not just Valentino Rossi. This time Andrea Locatelli was also there to keep the Doctor company at the Monza Rally Show. This was a true début for the rider from Selvino at the Brianza event. The Italtrans standard-bearer was on the track with a D-Max Ford Fiesta R5, fitted with a 1600 petrol engine with 280 horses.

A dream come true.

“Truly. To be honest, I never thought I would drive in this race, but then after Valencia I had the chance. I was able to test the Fiesta on the Alfa Romeo track, finding good sensations in braking and in acceleration. Obviously it takes some getting used to, but the hairpin turns are spectacular. Being a “track head” definitely helped.”

What struck you the most?

“Going from two to four wheels is exciting, partly because here you are strapped into a cockpit and you control everything. I probably need to get to know the brakes better, because you can brake very close to the turns. Maybe Moto2 is more difficult (he jokes), although this is still a track rally and it is different from traditional ones.”

A very famous rally has been held in your area for years.

“That’s true. Racing in the Selvino Rally is my dream. I followed it from the time I was small with my friends, taking a tent from home. Then I focused on bikes and I think I made the right choice. As I said, I would like a real rally very much, but at the same time, it can be dangerous. On the track there are fewer risks. You could have some more experiences there with other cars.”

Rossi said that you were fast.

“I thank him for that. I found good confidence and I tried to push. Obviously, I’m here to have fun.”

In a few months you will be back on two wheels. What should we expect in Moto2?

“It will be an apprenticeship year. It is a category of lions where we will need to take one step at a time. I was pleased with the first tests because the bike gave me good feedback, especially working on the tyres.”

What is the most complicated aspect to face?

In my opinion, the team is fundamental. I think I was lucky because Italtrans is a great reference. The category has a truly high level with great balance. I think it is the hardest one.”

In the wet, you have achieved positive results. The same thing could happen in Moto2 as well.

“Exactly, but first I need to be in that situation with the bike and understand what my confidence level will be. I won’t be under any illusions.”
