Moto3, Race Direction: firm hand for those slowing in qualifying

A crack down on riders who slow down to wait for a slipstream, new penalties ranging from 12 grid positions to disqualification

Race Direction: firm hand for those slowing in qualifying

Moto3 qualifying is often chaos, with riders who brake unexpectedly and then continue slowly as they wait for the right tow. Race Direction, in the past, has tried to prevent this behaviour, which could be dangerous, by coming up with a penalty system for those who exceed 110% of their best time to complete the three sectors of the track.

Up until now, a "slow" rider would be penalised with three grid positions. But the system has not worked too well and, each Saturday evening, there is a list of riders who have been caught, meaning the grid has to be reconfigured.

At Motegi Race Direction has decided on a new plan, calling the Moto3 riders in to inform them about the new and tougher penalties.

This is what will now happen to those slowing and waiting for a tow (whether done on or off track, covering it as a mistake):

First time: penalty of 12 grid positions and 1 point on the rider's licence.

Second time: start from last place on the grid and two points on the licence.

Third time: start from pitlane and three points on the licence.

Fourth time: race disqualification.
