Lorenzo: I was afraid I would miss the race

The hope for Lorenzo is that the Sachsenring will not turn into a replay of Assen. The conditions have not been the best: a crash in the morning, whereas in the afternoon he was the last of the Yamaha riders, 16th.

“Fortunately I was not hurt, neither my hand nor my foot – he says – As soon as I got up I thought I had hurt myself and that I would miss the race. Instead I am able to ride without any problems.

What happened?

The asphalt was very cold. I went in leaning a bit more and the steering close up on me.

It is always that turn 11…

“It is a fast spot on a counter-slope. This evening I’ll go to the Safety Commission because we need to understand if safety can be improved. Today the temperatures were low and the tyres too hard for these conditions. Even on the other corners you have to be very careful.

Did that crash condition you?

Afterward it becomes difficult to maintain confidence, but I am sure that if tomorrow we were racing at Mugello or Le Mans, for example, I would be competitive. Just like what happened at Assen, it is a combination of factors that is making me slow.”

Which ones?

In these conditions, with little grip, the Yamaha struggles more. I am unable to be fast in any area of the track. The new electronics system is also not working well and that is why we are so far behind. I was lacking confidence in the front and I didn’t have traction.

What are you hoping?

That Sunday we’ll race in the sun or in the rain, not with conditions like today.
