That was his nickname, linked to a race horse. His mother kept religious images with her in the garage.

He was known as “The Mexican”, Luis Salom. A nickname, it seems, linked to a race horse that his brother cared for. In truth, no-one knows the reason for this choice but on one occasion Luis has said that he'd reveal the secret once he won a championship title.

A wildcard in 2009, in Spain, he won his first Grand Prix in 2012 at Indianapolis in Moto3. Up until today, he had clocked up nine wins and sixteen podiums, of which ten second and six third places.

He scored all of his wins with the smallest engine, fighting for the title in the final race of 2013. He had to settle for the bronze medal, because it was Vinales who won, ahead of Rins. And in 2014 the jump to the Moto2 category with team Sito Pons. There, under the guidance of the former 250 champion, Luis scored two podiums, at Termas de Rio Hondo and Mugello.

This year, he had moved to the Stop and Go team of Edu Perales, embarking on a new adventure with a podium at his very first race at Qatar.
Born on 7 August 1981 in Palma de Maiorca, Salom grew up in the Rookies Cup, where he just missed out on the title win in 2008, coming second before moving to the world championship.

Managed by manager Marco Rodrigo, he was accompanied at the tracks by his mother Maria Horrach. His father, on the other hand, preferred to stay at home with the rest of the family in Majorca, although he'd sometimes come to Montmelò.

He leaves behind a brother and a sister, but particularly the unique relationship that he had with his mother, so close that he had a tattoo of her on his forearm. A religious woman, who would always hold close images of the Virgin Mary, even inside the garage.
