MotoGP, Ducati: Dovi and Iannone tested the Open
The long awaited moment has finally arrived: today at Sepang Andrea Dovizioso and Andrea Iannone have got their first taste of their Ducati under the Open option. And they got different impressions on it. If Dovi’s lap times were almost identical with both configurations, Iannone preferred the Factory option.
"Some ECU’s controls with the Open software are different and don’t work as well as our Factory software – was the Dovizioso’s first analysis – We planned more test for tomorrow so we will see. We have to understand where we can work on, because certain areas are quite limited".
In any case, the day was generally a good one for the Italian, "Today was positive enough, the track is not as quick as the Sepang 1 tests so the times are a reference only to a certain point, but it’s always important to make comparisons with the others".
In this phase his work is focused on the last detail.
"We’re refining the set-up of the bike, at this moment there isn’t much new material to try but we’ve managed to find something interesting the same. In the hottest hours of the day we constantly lapped under the barrier of 2'02" with used tires. This doesn't mean we have the pace of the front-runners because we have not it but I am very pleased with the improvement over these two days. I really didn’t expect that and it’s a positive thing to experience this sensation".
A bit less enthusiast was Andrea Iannone, who close the second day of test at Sepang in eleventh position (+1.134). His was the last Factory Ducati in the times-sheet. For Iannone the day was "a bit complicated but not negative. We were faster than yesterday and I had a good feeling. Our work on the GP14 is not ended yet, I want to fix the braking area were my biggest problem is".
The Pramac Team prolonged his lunch-break stop (already quite long for everyone due to the scorching temperatures at midday) due to a technical problem.
"We suffered an engine problem, I had to stop for three hours but finally we fixed it. We are adapting the bike to my needs: we tried all the components available during Sepang 1 and now we just have to set it up. My feeling is not perfect yet but we are not so far. It’s already a lot better than the last year".
The Italian remained cautious on the Open option for Ducati. For now his priority remains to fix the little problems he still has with his GP14.
"Up to today I didn’t discuss the matter so much, internally. They brought this bike to me and I made a few laps but I didn’t found so many advantages with it yet: I was a lot slower than I’m with the Factory option, but I didn’t use it for long: the ECU software is still unrefined. Besides, until Ducati’s choice is not announced we can’t try the Open tires".Translated by Federica De Zottis
