Jerez: De Puniet fastest on the Aprilia
Today was the second of a three day Jerez test for some MotoGP, CRT, and Moto2 teams. The surprise of the session was Randy De Puniet, the Frenchman managing to unofficially set the fastest lap aboard the Aprilia RSV4 Superbike, a 1’41”5. By way of comparison, that is roughly 2.8s slower than Lorenzo's pole time from this season. De Puniet continued working to adapt the bike to Bridgestone tires and carbon brakes, which should help when it comes time to build the chassis that will house the Italian V4 engine.
Colin Edwards, who appeared to be fastest before De Puniet's unofficial time was announced, set a best lap of 1'42"6. Apparently the Texan has been pleasantly surprised by the Suter-BMW, and he thinks it can take another step forward with a more advanced electronics package. A little slower was the FTR-Kawasaki ridden by Silva and Hernandez, both above the 1’44” mark.
Among the Moto2 riders in action, it was Scott Redding going fastest on his Kalex, setting a best lap of 1'42"9. The British rider was roughly a tenth quicker than Pol Espargaro, and four tenths ahead of Tito Rabat. Fastest of the Suter riders was Alex De Angelis, with a 1’44”0, while 125cc world champion Nico Terol set a 1’44”5, ahead of new teammate Toni Elias' 1’44”9.
Having completed his testing work on the Ducati GPZero, Carlos Checa headed off to Russia for the presentation of the Moscow WSBK round.
